Bringing mobile lung services to you.

Lung Health Check is Canada’s first mobile lung program, bringing important lung services to rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in Alberta—where access is often limited.

The mobile fleet includes a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) van and low-dose computerized tomography (CT) scan truck.

These services support early detection and ongoing care for lung conditions—leading to more effective treatment and improved health outcomes.

This program is funded by the Government of Alberta, Alberta Cancer Foundation and AstraZeneca, and coordinated by Praxus Health and Aceso Medical.

Albertans have a lung condition.

Lung Health is important. Every day Albertans of all ages are diagnosed with lung conditions, including:

  • Asbestosis

  • Asthma

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Cystic Fibrosis (CF)

  • Farmer’s Lung

  • Lung cancer

  • Pulmonary Fibrosis

Getting your lungs checked can help catch problems early and manage existing conditions, leading to better health outcomes.

Check early, breathe easy.

Meet the fleet.

Lung Health Check mobile units are staffed by qualified nurses, CT technicians, and respiratory therapists, and offer the following on-site services with a referral from a primary care provider:

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) van

What is it?

A PFT is a set of breathing tests that check how well your lungs work. It measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, how fast you can breathe out, and how well your lungs deliver oxygen to your blood.

The most common test—spirometry—involves blowing into a tube to assess lung capacity and airflow.

The Lung Health Check van is equipped to perform these tests using a Level 3 body box, accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons. It also offers pre- and post-spirometry.

Who is it for?

This test is available to anyone ages 5+ who requires a PFT for diagnosis or monitoring.

Low-dose Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan truck

What is it?

A low-dose chest CT scan is a type of x-ray that takes detailed images of your lungs to look for changes. The scan takes a few minutes and does not require an injection or dye.

It helps detect lung diseases—including early-stage lung cancer—before symptoms appear.

Who is it for?

Low-dose CT scans will be available to individuals eligible for lung cancer screening, based on Alberta guidelines

  • A low-dose chest CT scan takes about 10 minutes.

  • A low-dose chest CT scan uses a small amount of radiation—typically about the same as what you’d be exposed to from a cross-country flight.

Modern CT scanners are designed to use the lowest possible dose of radiation, while providing clear images, making them a safe and effective tool for monitoring lung health.
